Simon Harris is widely expected to be named the next Taoiseach and the new Fine Gael leader tomorrow.

The closing date for applications to become the new Fine Gael leader close on Sunday, with Harris expected to be the only candidate in the race and therefore automatically become leader of the party.

The former Minister for Health and current Minister for Higher Education has received widespread support from his party colleagues, and would formally be appointed Taoiseach on the 9th of April according to RTÉ News.

He would become the third Taoiseach appointed under the current coalition Government, following Michael Martin and the recently-resigning Leo Varadkar.

There have been widespread calls for a snap General Election from the opposition, but it seems more likely now that the next General Election will be in 2025.
