The Indian community in Letterkenny came together to celebrate the ancient Hindu festival of Holi this week.

The Festival of Colours has been a long-celebrated tradition in the Hindu world, with Letterkenny holding its own version of Holi as part of Donegal County Council’s One Donegal Social Inclusion Week.

Holi, known as the Festival of Colours, is one of India’s most significant cultural celebrations, symbolising the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of spring. This year, the Letterkenny Indian Community was delighted to share the richness of their culture and traditions with the wider community of Donegal, in partnership with Donegal County Council.

The event promised a dazzling array of colours, music, dance, and delicious traditional Indian cuisine. Attendees were able to immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere, as they partook in the customary throwing of colour, known as “gulal,” and enjoyed lively performances showcasing the diversity of Indian dance and music.

Speaking about the significance of the event, Sharmila Kamat from the Letterkenny Indian Community, expressed, “Holi is a time for unity, joy, and inclusivity. As we came together to celebrate this beautiful festival, we also celebrated the diversity that enriches our community. We were thrilled to open our doors and hearts to our fellow Donegal residents, inviting them to share in the festivities and embrace the spirit of togetherness.”

Christina O’Donnell, representing Donegal County Council, commented, “Donegal County Council is proud to support initiatives that promote diversity, inclusion, and community cohesion. Collaborating with the Letterkenny Indian Community for the Holi Festival was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity and strengthen bonds within our community.”

“One Donegal Social Inclusion Week 2024 was a testament to the county’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive society, where every individual feels valued and respected regardless of their background or identity. The celebration of Holi served as a fitting conclusion to a week dedicated to promoting understanding, acceptance, and solidarity among all members of the community, with the support of Donegal County Council.”

“The Letterkenny Indian Community and residents of Donegal joined in commemorating Holi and embracing the message of unity and diversity that lay at the heart of this colourful festival.”
