A retired couple have died in a house fire in Co Mayo.

Emergency services attended the scene of the fire the Deerpark area on the outskirts of Swinford after the alarm was raised in the early hours of this morning at around 2am.

It is understood the alarm was raised after a neighbour’s dog became frightened and started barking.

The fire service managed to bring the blaze at the two storey house under control but tragically the fire was well advanced by the time they were notified.

The couple were well-known in the area.

Enquiries are ongoing.
