One in 4 nurseries have experienced a data breach in 2023 says Dr Clare Ryan, ITUS Secure Technologies, which is not unexpected given the increasing reliance on technology to operate.

Childcare providers become an appealing target for cyber-attacks and yet 50% of providers do not have a disaster recovery plan for cyber.

Safeguarding young and vulnerable children is a key element in childcare provision and cannot be overstated. Data belonging to children including their images is highly valuable to cyber criminals. For Early Years practitioners, good cybersecurity focuses on protecting the personal or sensitive information that is held on children and their families.

Understanding where the risk lies with digital programmes and software and being able to mitigate against it can be challenging, says Clare, so we thought we would support the local childcare sector with this.

We have an open invite to anyone working in the childcare sector to join us on Wednesday 10th April in the Clanree Hotel to hear top tips from our expert panel. Register here.

The panel will include Educational Technologies Avril McMonagle, Mosaic Digital Solutions, Felix O’Callaghan from Arachas who will discuss the role of insurance in risk mitigation, and representatives from An Garda Cybercrime Bureau who will give some top tips on protecting your organisation from cybercrime, as well as Karen McCormick, inCharge who will share her views on digital safeguarding from a parent’s perspective.

Avril McMonagle, comments that ‘children have become intrusively visible through their portrayal on social media platforms. She comments that this is so commonplace, that children themselves, as individuals, have become invisible. They have been put on a digital world stage – their images and daily lives represented in a way that they have no control over – either now or in the future’.

Avril McMonagle

Karen McCormick, parent of a vulnerable adult child says, ‘Challenges with communication can impact a child’s right to choose and ability to be heard. Storytelling is important in building more inclusive communities and societies. However, in doing this we must safeguard the rights of the vulnerable child.’

Karen McCormick

This seminar is essential for anyone working within the early childcare sector, including nursery and preschool educators, childminders, and early years managers. Whether you’re a digital novice or savvy user, you’ll leave with valuable insights and tools to enhance your professional practice and ensure the digital well-being and privacy of the children in your care and their families.
