A Garda investigation is underway to recover a stolen car after what was thought to be a private sale turned sour.
A Letterkenny resident had listed their Mercedes E 200 Avantgrade for sale on social media.
They said they were contacted by a man who appeared very interested in buying the car. A visit was arranged for the man to view the car at the owner’s residence at Carnamuggagh, near Mountain Top.
The ‘potential buyer’ visited the owner’s home last night (Wednesday). Following in-depth inspections and a test drive, the owner said it appeared things were going smoothly.
“The situation took a turn when (the man) abruptly seized the opportunity to take the car. Under the guise of inspecting the car’s tyres and brake pads, he cunningly manoeuvred himself into the driver’s seat, swiftly locking the doors before any of us could react,” the owner told Donegal Daily.
The person reportedly drove off in the direction of Illistrin.
The owner is now searching for their car and urging others to be way of this type of theft.
The car registration is 161D16609 and the vehicle is distinctive as it has an ‘N’ plate.
Gardaí have confirmed that investigations are ongoing.
“Gardaí are investigating the unauthorised taking of a vehicle at a residence in Carnamuggah, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal that occurred at approximately 11:00pm last night, Wednesday 10th April 2024,” a spokesperson said.
