Government made ‘absolute mess’ of Ireland’s immigration system – Mac Lochlainn TD

Sinn Féin Deputy Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has said that the government must listen to the Irish public before signing up to an EU migration pact.

The Pact will overhaul rules and policies in the areas of migration, asylum, integration and border management across the EU.

But Deputy Mac Lochlainn says it needs a broad, open and transparent debate must happen in the Dáil this week in advance of the Government referring the Pact to the Justice Committee.

Teachta Mac Lochlainn said; “The Irish public are rightfully asking to be heard, to be listened to and to be involved in the issue of Ireland’s immigration system and the Government must provide time this week in the Dáil on the EU migration pact to allow TDs raise ideas, suggestions and concerns on behalf of their constituents.

“The Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Green Government have made an absolute mess of Ireland’s immigration system.

“Their approach is doing no favours for people seeking international protection and refuge or for communities that are not being engaged with when centres are being identified to house and integrate international migrants.

“Sinn Féin has repeatedly said that we need a well-managed migration system that is fair, efficient and enforced.

“This can be done in a manner that balances human rights concerns with stringent enforcement of our rules.”

Deputy Mac Lochlainn says there the Government are trying to sign Ireland up to the EU migration pact over a 3-week parliamentary period and without any debate in the Dáil before it goes to committee.

He said: “Not only does this Government not listen, but they also don’t learn when it comes to Ireland’s immigration system and the mistakes they have made.

“This Government opt-in for Ireland to the EU migration pact cannot be rushed.

“Sinn Féin has put down an amendment to the Government motion requesting a debate and will call a Dáil vote if required. A debate must happen in the Dáil this week.”
