Popular Derry restaurant closing its doors over spiralling costs

A popular Derry restaurant has announced that it is pulling the shutters down on the business over the rise in costs it is facing.

The Sooty Olive, based on Spencer Road, took to social media to reveal that this will be its last week of trading.

The award-winning restaurant boasted many Donegal-inspired dishes such as their famous McDaids Football Special ribs and Greencastle fish.

Writing on Facebook yesterday, proprietor Sean Harrigan said: “After 11 years almost to the day our journey is coming to an end. We will be closing the restaurant on Sunday 21st of April due to ever increasing difficulties in running a small restaurant with ever increasing costs.

“We have had an amazing 11 years…a heartfelt thanks to our staff over the years…our suppliers and of course you our amazing customers. So if there’s vouchers to be used this is the week… Thank you all so much for the memories #teamsooty”

The news has shocked its patrons.

Cara Forrest posted: “This is such a loss to the city. An amazing restaurant, staff are so lovely and the food is really high quality. Hands down the best steak you will get.

“So sad to hear you have felt pushed out of business. There should be more assistance available to keep such great places open. Wishing you and staff all the best in the future.”

Paul Harrigan reacted by saying: “What a shame. The rates don’t help but costs of staffing and utility supplies are going through the roof not to mention the actual food items required, fish, meat, veg etc;.

“Another local business closed. Sad

“Thanks Sean and staff for the past 11 years. Hope all works out for you.”
