Young people in Donegal are being urged to apply to an EU scheme that will give them free travel passes for use across Europe.

The European Commission announced that 35,000 such passes were being made available for DiscoverEU travel pass application – 398 of those being made available for Irish young people.

Anyone born between 1 July 2005 and 30 June 2006 can apply, and successful applicants will get a free rail pass to travel in Europe for up to 30 days between 1 July 2024 and 30 September 2025.

Applications are open until 11 am on Tuesday 30th April 2024.

Local Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh said of the scheme, that “this is a wonderful opportunity for young people to see Europe, visit its many wonderful cities, soak up the culture, and explore the incredible beauty of the continent, meet new people and form new friendships, and I would urge young people to apply, at least some of these passes will make their way to Donegal and offer the adventure of a lifetime for the lucky recipients.”
