Derry native Brian Campbell will be remembered at a Requiem Mass this Thursday, following his tragic passing after a fall while hiking in Donegal.
Brian and another man were climbing the Poisoned Glen on Saturday afternoon when the tragic events unfolded.
Brian, aged in his 50s, suffered fatal injuries in a fall which has been described as a “catastrophic accident” by rescue services. The second man, also aged in his 50s, was airlifted to hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
Mr. Campbell is survived by his devoted wife Donna and their loving children, Caomhán and Nicole.
His wake is commencing on Tuesday 23rd April from 11:00am to 10:00pm and on Wednesday from 11:00am to 10:00pm.
The Requiem Mass will take place on Thursday, April 25th, at St. Mary’s Church, Creggan.
The procession will leave Mr Campbell’s home at 42 Woodbrook West at 10:20 am for the 11:00 am service. Interment afterwards in the City Cemetery.
Donegal Mountain Rescue volunteers have shared their condolences following the tragic incident.
The team outlined the details of the call-out, which involved a difficult and technical extraction with the support of Rescue 118.
A spokesperson said: “On Saturday 20th April 2024, DMRT (Donegal Mountain Rescue Team) were tasked at 13:24 hours by AGS Galway to Poison Glenn and were put on full stand-by. Once more information was obtained, it was established that there had been a catastrophic accident involving two climbers, one of which had not survived.
“Rescue 118 was tasked to the scene as the DMRT hasty team made their way to the rendezvous point. As members of the team approached the casualty’s location, Rescue 118 was already on scene and, after a difficult and technical extraction, airlifted the second casualty to Letterkenny Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“The team’s rope technicians proceeded to set up two complex rope systems in order to recover the remaining casualty. They manoeuvred the stretcher back to the RV point where AGS and NAS were waiting.
“The team was stood down at 22:59 hours.
“Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased.
“We wish to express our sincerest thanks to everyone involved in this difficult and hugely technical incident, including Rescue 118, An Garda Síochána and National Ambulance Service (NAS).”
