Film fundraiser in Milford to support medical aid in Palestine

A night of film, discussion and solidarity will take place in Milford in May to shine a light on the conflict in Palestine.

Milford & District Resource Centre, in partnership with the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (Donegal Branch), is hosting a screening of ‘Freedom to Run’ on Friday, 3rd May at 7.30pm in the Gallowglass Community Centre.

The documentary, filmed in 2018, examines the everyday experience of apartheid by Palestinians in the West Bank.

‘Freedom to Run’ documents an exchange project between two groups of runners – one Scottish, one Palestinian – who participate in the Palestine and Edinburgh marathons. The marathon becomes a framing device to learn about the Israeli occupation, as you can’t run more than 10km in the West Bank without hitting checkpoints, roadblocks, or other obstacles.

“Since October, the devastation in Gaza has once again drawn the world’s eyes to Palestine for the wrong reasons” said Declan Meehan, manager of MDRC.

“I think most people feel helpless in the face of such destruction and loss of life, so we wanted to do something to provide an outlet for solidarity and action. We wanted to build awareness of the Palestinian experience under occupation, while also raising much-needed funds for the critical work MAP carry out in Gaza, the West Bank and with Palestinian refugees. We hope that many people will join us for a night of film, discussion and solidarity on the 3rd of May.”

All money raised will go to the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP). MAP provides immediate medical aid to Palestinians in need at times of crisis, while also developing local capacity and skills to ensure the long-term development of the Palestinian healthcare system.

There will be a flavour of Palestine on the night with light refreshments from the region served before the film. The screening will be followed by a music session in the Travellers Inn.

Tickets are €15 per person and can be purchased at: https://www.klubfunder.com/Clubs/Milford_and_District_Resource_Centre/TicketSales
