The animal rescue community in Donegal is mourning the sad passing of a tireless volunteer, Joey McBrearty, a co-founder of Animals in Need CLG.

Joey has been remembered as a true champion of animal welfare. He and his wife Mary were the founding members of the Donegal Town-based Animals in Need, established in 2006 to save, protect and rehome stray, injured and abandoned domestic pets.

Mr McBrearty, of 6 Errigal Road, Letterkenny, passed peacefully in Letterkenny University Hospital on Saturday and was laid to rest yesterday, Monday.

“Joey’s legacy of compassion and boundless love for all creatures will forever inspire us,” said a tribute from Animals in Need.

“He dedicated his life to rescuing animals in need, never hesitating to lend a hand, no matter the hour. His kindness knew no bounds, and his impact on the community of Donegal is immeasurable,” they said.

Known for his love of dogs, Joey was often seen transporting animals in the charity’s van with a canine companion by his side.

“We are sure that you will be greeted at the rainbow bridge with many tail wags and abundant licks and cuddles,” the tribute continued.

“Thank you for all your dedication and kindness.

“Our hearts go out to Joey’s beloved wife Mary, nephew Shane, nieces Lisa-Marie and Ashling, and all his cherished family and friends.

“May his spirit of kindness and generosity continue to guide us all. Rest in peace, dear friend.”

Mr McBrearty’s funeral mass was held at St Eunan’s Cathedral, Letterkenny on Monday 29th April, with burial afterwards in St Mary’s Cemetery, Ramelton.

Donations if desired to Animals in Need Donegal, c/o any family member.
