Patton expected to return in goals for Ulster Final

Donegal are hoping that first-choice goalkeeper Shaun Patton will be available for the Ulster Final.

The Letterkenny man was forced off in the win over Derry in the quarter final after playing a major role in setting up some of Donegal’s goals with his pin-point kick-outs.

St Naul’s Gavin Mulreany was a more than able replacement for Patton when he came on in the Derry game and then started against Tyrone.

Donegal manager Jim McGuinness is hopeful St Eunan’s star Patton will have recovered in time for Sunday week’s game in Clones.

Patton warmed up before Sunday’s game and was running at full tilt.

“Pretty much precautionary to be honest with you,” McGuinness said of Patton’s omission.

“He was there or thereabouts and it was one of those ones where if he did play the way he plays and the way he likes to strike the ball that it could have put him in a situation where he could miss so much more. No, he will be fine.”

McGuinness will need all his players to be at the peak of their fitness to overcome the challenge of Armagh, a foe he knows too well.

“Two weeks will feel like three months for us now in terms of preparation for this one and a lot of our analysis is already done because we have already played them twice,” McGuinness said of Armagh.

“We are not starting from zero. We didn’t play Tyrone this year in the league so we have an opportunity now to quickly get up to speed with Armagh but obviously that works both ways.”
