Independent Councillor Frank McBrearty has confirmed he will run in next month’s local elections.

The Raphoe man was first elected to Donegal County Council in 2009 and has served in the Lifford-Stranorlar Municipal District.

Speaking about his decision to seek re-election, Cllr McBrearty described it as “one of the toughest of my life”.

“The last five years on Donegal County Council, especially the last three, have been very difficult, very tough for my family and me, my wider family circle, my friends, my supporters and my constituents,” he said

In a lengthy statement, Cllr McBrearty acknowledged the legal process he is engaged in involving the council.

“Most people know and understand, it can be very costly to defend yourself in the Irish Courts of Justice,” he added.

“However, I am one person who has successfully travelled this road before and I will continue the fight to clear my good name and political reputation – just as I did in the past, when I was wrongfully accused of a murder I did not commit.”

He said his decision to seek re-election followed discussions with his family.

“My desire to fight for people’s rights has never diminished and I am even more determined today to fight for and protect our rights.”
