Bright sunshine accompanied the official opening of a new extension to Gairmscoil Mhic Diarmada on Arranmore Island on Monday afternoon last.

The extension comprises of an Art Room, additional classroom, toilets, storage area and foyer area.

Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh, lead vocalist and musician for the Irish folk music band Altan was the special guest opn what was a most enjoyable day.

Other guest speakers included Principal Mary Doherty, School Board of Management Chairperson Caroline McCauley and our Chief Executive of the Donegal ETB, Anne McHugh.

A stone sculpture was commissioned by Gearoid Sweeney in memory of the O’Donnell and Coll families who formerly owned the land on which the new school extension is located.

Maureen Harker, a relative who is currently residing in America donated $2,000 earlier in the year for the upkeep of the Art room and the school gardens in the vicinity of the school. As a mark of appreciation and respect for this goodwill gesture, the sculpture was also unveiled on the day.
.
Music was provided by Mairead Mí Mhaonaigh in conjunction with the folk music duo Brian and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn from ‘Ye Vagabonds’ with contributions also from the local choir.
