Bookies shorten Donegal’s odds for Sam after impressive displays

Donegal have been backed down to 7/1 from 12/1 to be crowned All-Ireland champions this year after they began their group campaign with an impressive victory over Tyrone.

Jim McGuinness’ side had already ended the Red Hand bid at the semi-final stage in the Ulster Championship and reasserted their authority by turning a one-point half-time lead into a comfortable seven-point victory in Ballybofey.

Lawrence Lyons, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Donegal are starting to worry us a bit because they’ve been backed at much bigger prices and punters are really starting to believe they can dethrone the Dubs in the race for Sam.”

The latest moves in the betting mean Donegal are now rated the biggest danger of the Ulster contingent still in the race for the Sam Maguire, with Derry drifting out to 12/1 following their opening group defeat to Galway.

The Tribesmen are third favourites at 7/1 to land a first All-Ireland title since beating Meath in the 2001 final,  but defending champions Dublin remain 6/4 favourites after they stretched clear of a resolute Roscommon side at Croke Park to run out winners by 2-19 to 0-13 in their opening match in Group 2.

Kerry, who are red hot favourites to make it two from two in their group when they face Meath this weekend, are 5/2 second favourites to wrestle the silverware back off the Sky Blues.
