Are you interested in a future in film? Spraoi agus Spórt in Carndonagh are running free 4-day workshops in June and July on digital film making for young people.

The workshops will be led by experts from the Nerve Centre in Derry and supported by the Shared Island Fund, says coordinator Deirdre McGrory. Deirdre is Creative Youth Engagement Coordinator with Spraoi agus Spórt, the award-winning social enterprise based in Carndonagh.

She says the workshops offer “a great chance to learn from experts and gain hands-on experience for young people who want to make their own films. Whether you’re passionate about filmmaking, media, production, theatre, or other creative art forms, this is your chance to start your journey.”

Spraoi are running 2 courses of introductory workshops, on 4th-7th June or on 1st-4th July, from 10am to 3:30pm each day. These film workshops will be held at the Digital Creative Lab (Unit 9), in Carndonagh.

Deirdre says these workshops are designed for people aged 14-19 who are eager to learn and explore film making. You will cover an introduction to shooting, editing and producing your own short films. All the necessary equipment and refreshments will be supplied and experienced filmmakers will help participants every step of the way. Deirdre says it will be “a friendly, supportive environment to learn and meet like-minded people”.

“You might be interested in a career in film and TV, or just want to up your TikTok game. Teenagers can explore their interests and gain valuable skills in film and media production here in Inishowen.  Whether you’re a newbie or have some experience, there’s something for everyone at these workshops.”

The Irish film industry has been producing world-class work for years, says John Peto, Head of Development at the Nerve Centre. “Donegal is increasingly a part of that story. This project gives young people in Inishowen the chance to get an early sense of what filmmaking is all about and develop real world skills that will help them thrive in the digital world. It may just inspire them to become filmmakers themselves.’

We are delighted to host the Shared Island Film School workshops, says Spraoi CEO and Co-Founder, Helen Nolan. “These workshops will provide our young people with the opportunity to develop their digital film skills under the guidance of expert staff from the Nerve Centre. The creative arts industries in Donegal and Inishowen are flourishing, particularly in the film industry. We are delighted to introduce this programme to our range of services. We want our young people to have access to top class digital creative experiences.”
