A new documentary produced by the Donegal LGBTQ+ Heritage Project will have its premiere in Buncrana during Inishowen Pride Weekend at the beginning of June.
‘Mise’ delves into the hidden pages of Donegal’s history books to unveil the untold stories of our community of LGBTQ+ and allies.
The screening is a collaboration between The Disappear Here Film Club and Inishowen Pride and will take place in the Tullyarvan Mill on Saturday June 1st from 7-9pm.
The joint effort follows on from the success of last year when the Film Club took their show on the road to Buncrana for the Pride weekend in 2023.
Michael McLaughlin of the Disappear Film Club, said they are proud to be teaming up with Inishowen Pride again this year in bringing the LGBTQ+ films to their audience.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with the Inishowen Pride Committee to showcase these impactful films,” said Film Club Producer Michael McLaughlin.
“Film has a unique power to amplify diverse voices and spark important conversations, and we are honoured once again to provide a platform for LGBTQ+ filmmakers to share their stories.”
The Disappear Here Film Club, which is a partnership between Disappear Here Film Festival, ChangeMakers Donegal and Concern Worldwide, is designed to bring people together once a month to see a societal or global theme played out on screen and to give people the opportunity to discuss these issues as a community.
Local and Global issues
Myra McAuliffe Project Coordinator with Changemakers said that by highlighting diverse voices and stories from the LGBTQ+ community, they hope to promote inclusivity, understanding, and celebration of all identities.
“We have a range of films set up for people that will explore both the local and global angles of LGBTQI+ stories which ChangeMakers focuses on,” said Myra.
As well as the screening of ‘Mise’, there will be showings of ‘HOMOFÓNIA’, A short film which deals of the complexities of a closeted relationship set against a traditional Irish backdrop and ‘Sisak’ | India’s First Silent LGBTQ Love Story – which gives the local to global angle.
Following the screenings in Tullyarvan Mill there will be a panel discussion featuring: Brónagh Heverin, ATU (Chair), with Adam McBride, Nora Stapleton and Saurabh Washimkar.
Jen McCarron, committee member with Inishowen Pride said they are delighted to be able to show films such as this in Buncrana.
She thanked ChangeMakers Donegal and the Disappear Here Film Club for collaborating with them once more.
“Inishowen Pride is delighted to collaborate with Changemakers and Disappear Here Film Club to showcase a selection of thought-provoking films again this year,” said Jen.
“With both local and global themes being explored this is a fantastic opportunity to broaden our understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences.”
Jen, who was part of the production team behind ‘Mise’ said they are excited to be able to screen ‘Mise’ in Inishowen for the first time as part of the Pride programme.
“Mise tells the stories of those who have challenged societal norms, defied prejudice and discrimination to be true to themselves. It is an emotional and enlightening testament to the strength of the human spirit of individuals who are from or connected with Donegal,” added Jen.
