Residents of Newtowncunningham have generated a massive figure of almost €45,000 to support families affected by lightning strikes during Storm Isha in January.
The weather event caused fires at three homes in the Rooskey area.
Fortunately, no one was injured, but the properties were badly damaged by fire and water and residents suffered considerable losses.
In the days after the emergency, the Newtowncunningham community quickly rallied to organise fundraisers to support their neighbours.
Local Fianna Fail Councillor Paul Canning revealed the total raised as the committee dissolves this week.
Twenty-one fundraising events, from tractor runs to church collections, gathered €44,917.93 in donations.
Cllr Canning said the money has been divided out in consultation with the complete committee.
He expressed his gratitude to everyone who donated, supported the cause, and especially the committee members who dedicated their time and effort. “We are now dissolved as a committee with no debts, regrets and a balance sheet of €0,” Canning concluded.
