The long-awaited new classroom was officially opened at Glenmaquin NS this week.

A number of local politicians, dignitaries and community members attended the opening ceremony.

The new classroom sees a modernisation of the school and a doubling of the floor space available for students to learn in.

The ribbon was cut by Clarke Gardiner, who has been a long-serving member of the school’s Board of Management.

Also in attendance was Deputy Joe McHugh and local Councillors Donal Coyle and Donal “Mandy” Kelly.

There was plenty of entertainment in store as the children performed songs and gave readings, with celebrations also for the 6th class students at the school who had their graduation on the day of the classroom opening.

Reverend Gordy McCracken also led a prayer service as part of the ceremony.

Chairperson of the Board of Management, Mr John Kelly, said in his speech what a great achievement it was considering that the school had doubled the floor space and created a modern, 21st century classroom for the pupils of Glenmaquin.

Principal Mrs Debbie Browne thanked everyone who worked so hard on the building project and the renovations to the old building, including the PTA, builder Mr. John McHugh and architect Mr. Dominic Whoriskey. She also congratulated the children and Deputy Principal, Ms. Charlotte Hughes for all their hard work in achieving 3 flags in the one school year, for Green Schools, Active flag and Amber flag for mental health and wellbeing. She mentioned all the initiatives the children partake in, including Creative Clusters, Blast programme, Say Yes to Languages, Peace 4 not to mention all the trips and outings that the children go on throughout the year.

The school also extended special thanks to Mrs. Samantha McGlinchey, school SNA, for her continuous support and hard work, and to the PTA for the tea and sandwiches provided on the day, as well as a beautiful purple velvet cake provided by Diane Nesbitt.
