Caution urged as thousands flock to summer events this weekend

People are being urged to buckle up for a very busy weekend on the roads as major events take place in Dublin and in other towns across the country.

The capital is set for a bumper weekend of gigs, festivals and sport with Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, Shania Twain, Longitude, the GAA quarter-finals in Croke Park and Dublin Pride all taking place, to name but a few.

Closer to home, gardaí will have a presence at the Donegal Town Summer Festival.

As thousands of extra journeys are taken, Gardaí are reminding people to plan ahead and leave plenty of time for the unexpected. Public transport will be very busy for the duration of the weekend.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s events Deputy Commissioner, Policing Operations, Shawna Coxon, said: “It is our proactive work, supporting communities and community events and while out and about meeting people that is very often the most meaningful and important to those we serve.

“An Garda Síochána is a community based policing service. We want you to enjoy yourselves, but to be mindful of others and how your behaviour impacts their experience of any one of the exciting events taking place this weekend.

“Many public events this summer would not be able to go ahead were it not for the Gardaí that will be working above and beyond this weekend and for the remainder of the season, to keep people safe. This weekend is jam-packed with lots of activity, and we hope everyone has a great time. Please call on us if you need any help or assistance, and in an emergency or immediate danger always dial 999/112.”
