Former US President Donald Trump was shot in the ear in an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

An audience member and the gunman were killed in the incident on Saturday evening.

Trump sustained a bullet wound to his ear in the attack.

The FBI identified the alleged gunman as a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man, whose motive is yet unclear.

“Much bleeding took place,” Republican candidate Trump said in a statement.

“Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.”

Mr Trump continued: “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.

“Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead.

“I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.

“Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!”

Taoiseach Simon Harris reacted to the incident and said: “What we saw last night from Pennsylvania was frightening and wrong. It is a relief that former President Trump is safe and survived the assassination attempt. Our hearts are with the innocent spectators killed and critically injured. There can be no place for political violence.”
