One-way system sought for remainder of summer in Rathmullan

There are calls for a temporary one-way system in Rathmullan to control traffic congestion this summer.

The seaside town is experiencing travel issues due to major work on the pier combined with a busy tourism season.

Cllr Pauric McGarvey has warned that there are busier weeks to come.

Cllr McGarvey told today’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford MD that a major traffic jam created gridlock during rally weekend as vehicles queued for the Lough Swilly ferry.

“The amusements arrived last night and it’s only going to add more congestion,” Cllr McGarvey told the council today.

Following his own consultation with gardaí, Cllr McGarvey said: “I think one way should be put in place as a temporary measure to relieve the traffic as works are going on.”

Cllr Liam Blaney added that summer season is an opportune time to trial a one-way system to determine the best direction it should run when the active travel scheme is constructed.

Roads Engineer David McIlwaine, speaking on behalf of the council, said that a temporary one-way system can only be put in place by the Gardai and consultations can be had with the Gardai to establish if this is necessary and feasible.
