Six candidates have been nominated to contest the Fianna Fail convention in Donegal which will ultimately decide who will stand for the party in the next general election.
Nominations closed on Monday last, July 15th.
The candidates now nominated are Minister Charlie McConalogue, Senator Niall Blaney, Councillor Donal Mandy Kelly, Councillor Michael Naughton, Ben Harkin of Termon Ogra and former MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher.
All come with varying degrees of political experience.
It will now be a matter for local Fianna Fail party members to decide who should be put forward to contest the general election – a date for which has not been set.
Fianna Fail headquarters will decide on a strategy for the election which will include a decision on the number of candidates to be put forward locally.
Traditionally, two strong candidates may be put forward, one in the North East and another in the South West of the county.
No date has yet been set for the party’s county convention.
