Safety fears rise again over missing footpath from refugee accommodation

Donegal County Council has been urged to explore all options to install a footpath from Mulroy Woods Hotel in Milford to the retail park.

The hotel has been housing refugees since last year.

Cllr Declan Meehan raised serious safety concerns at a recent meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District, citing the increasing pedestrian traffic on the dangerous stretch of road.

Funding has been sought for this path in previous years, but the location of the hotel outside the town’s 50km zone means it does not qualify for NTA funding.

Cllr Meehan was told that an application for funding to construct a section of this footpath has been submitted for the 2024 Community Recognition Fund.

Welcoming the council’s effort, Cllr Meehan commented: “Not only would it provide a safe walking route, it would benefit business around the mart area and Lagg Service Station and provide a link to The Colmcille Trail as well.”

Cllr Pauric McGarvey, who called for the same footpath last year, seconded the motion and pointed out the worn tracks in the grass verge as evidence of the significant number of pedestrians using this route.
