An Taoiseach Simon Harris has joined the outpouring of tributes to 11-year-old Wicklow schoolgirl Clodagh Phelan, who died after a tragic fall in Spain.

Clodagh Phelan suffered fatal injuries after falling 65ft from a hotel balcony at the Club Mac Hotel in Alcúdia, Majorca, where she was staying on a family holiday with her parents Liam and Valerie and two brothers.

Police are treating the accident, which occurred at approx 6.30am this morning as a tragic accident.

Clodagh was a much-loved student and a keen young sportsperson involved in a number of local clubs.

Taoiseach Simon Harris said: “So much promise and personality snatched away in a terrible accident. Thoughts with her family and community at this truly awful time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”

Clodagh’s home athletics club Parnell AC said: “Parnell A.C. are truly heartbroken to share the devastating news of the passing of Clodagh Phelan, one of our juvenile athletes and friend to many of our younger athletes.

“Clodagh tragically passed away following an accident on holidays. Clodagh was a beautiful, spirited child and a great athlete who excelled in many sports, not just athletics.

“Her family Valerie, Liam, Will, and David and extended family are in our hearts, thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. As a mark of respect and to allow us all time to grieve the loss of Clodagh, there will be no training until further notice.”
