Article updated, July 26, 2024.

Lifeguards working at a popular north Donegal beach have been praised for ‘undoubtedly’ saving the life of a young girl yesterday.

The incident occurred at around 2:15pm at Marble Hill, a Blue Flag beach, on what was one of the few hot and sunny days this summer.

“A young girl got into trouble and, due to the fast actions of the lifeguards and some public, they were able to undoubtedly save this young girl’s life,” they said.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the young girl who had to be taken away by ambulance, and her family. Not all heroes wear capes – some wear red shorts and yellow T-shirts.”

Lifeguards are employed by Donegal County Council on a seasonal basis.

A spokesperson for the local authority confirmed that two lifeguards on duty learnt of an incident that occurred on the small beach north on the main Marble Hill beach.

“A young girl who was beside her father at the time had become ill possibly after inhaling some water,” they said.

“The Lifeguards assisted the father with carrying her from the beach, where they carried out a general first aid assessment, made her comfortable and supported the family while awaiting the arrival of the ambulance. The girl was taken to Letterkenny Hospital for a medical and to check for secondary drowning.”

The term ‘secondary drowning’ is used to describe another drowning complication. It happens if water gets into the lungs.
