The Glenties Local Electoral Area (LEA) was one of only three in Ireland that recorded more deaths than births in 2021.
The LEA had 37 more deaths than births during that period – 235 people died there in 2021 compared to 198 births.
Figures released today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) also revealed that the west Donegal area had the second lowest birth rate in the country at just 8.6 per 1,000 of population.
The lowest number of both births and deaths was recorded in the Milford LEA.
Across the county, a total of 397 deaths were recorded in 2021, while there were 1,756 births.
The majority of people who died in Donegal died as a result of diseases of the circulatory system. The second most common cause of death was tumours.
Of the 397 people who passed away in the county in 2021, 253 were attributed to diseases of the circulatory system.
The Donegal LEA had the highest death rate at 8.3 per 1,000 people.
Letterkenny had the highest birth rate here at 12.2 per 1,000 people – a total of 445 births were recorded in the town in 2021.
