A ‘One Million Stars’ Donegal exhibition has been launched to highlight the issue of domestic abuse.

Lifford Courthouse is set to shine brighter this summer with the enchanting event featuring thousands of handmade stars.

This inspiring initiative was co-funded by Creative Ireland/Éire Ildánach and Donegal Volunteer Centre. It is more than just an artistic endeavour – it’s a powerful statement of solidarity against domestic abuse and all forms of violence. One Million Stars is a collaborative effort by Donegal County Council Arts Service, Donegal Volunteer Centre, and the Regional Cultural Centre. This partnership has come together to weave a tapestry of community, culture, and creativity, symbolised by thousands of handmade stars.

The centrepiece of this initiative is a touring exhibition. This exhibition, which has been hung in the Regional Cultural Centre, Letterkenny, and Buncrana Town library, will now be hosted at the historic Lifford Old Courthouse.

Donegal Volunteer Centre has meticulously curated over ten thousand stars, each one crafted with care and intention.

“These stars serve as a poignant reminder of our collective stand against violence as each one represents hope, resilience, and unity,” a spokesperson for the centre said.

Throughout July and August, the community is invited to participate in star-making workshops.

These sessions are more than just craft activities; they are multicultural gatherings that foster inclusivity and connection. Participants from all backgrounds can come together to share stories, learn new skills, and contribute to this artwork.

“One Million Stars Donegal is not just an art exhibition – it’s a beacon of hope and a call to action. By participating in this initiative, community members are not only creating beautiful stars but also weaving a stronger, more compassionate community.”

Each star symbolises a stand against violence and a commitment to a safer, more inclusive world. As the stars light up Lifford Old Courthouse, they also illuminate the collective power of a community united against violence.

“This summer, let’s come together to create, share, and stand in solidarity. Join us at the One Million Stars Donegal exhibition and be part of a movement that uses art to shine a light on important social issues.”
