A Letterkenny schoolteacher has had her dissertation chosen for publication by Hibernia College.

Orla McHugh, who is a primary teacher, will have her work published among a collection of papers by graduates from its Post-Primary and Primary Education programmes.

Orla’s research examined ‘play-based learning with particular emphasis on the use of the Aistear framework in supporting children’s development in infant classrooms’. Her findings observed that while Aistear is positively used to facilitate play-based learning, which undoubtedly supports the holistic development of children, challenges were identified that include a lack of resources and personnel.

Undertaken during her master’s degree in Primary teaching, Orla’s full study is available in print and can be read online through the Hibernia College website.

Describing her research as ‘a testament to her dedication and hard work, and an important contribution to the advancement of knowledge and innovation in Irish schools’, Dr Mary Kelly, Academic Dean at Hibernia College, said: “Orla’s work forms part of a wider collection of key research issues that permeate Irish education today, and which we are proud to showcase for the future benefit of teachers and students interested in that field”.
