Mona McSharry has won Ireland’s first medal in the 2024 Olympics, taking Bronze in the 100m breaststroke final.

McSharry finished the final in 1:05:59 at La Defense.

This is the first Olympic medal for the Sligo native, who honed her skills at Ballyshannon Marlins Swim Club.

McSharry also set a new national record of 1:05.51 in the semi-finals yesterday.

Reacting to the win, Taoiseach Simon Harris wrote: “That was magic from Mona McSharry!

“Unbelievable turn and technique at the halfway point and what a battle to the end to claim Team Ireland’s first medal.”
