Despite a heroic new national record being set, the efforts of Ireland’s 4x100m medley relay team weren’t enough to send them through to an Olympic final.
Headlined by Olympic medalist Mona McSharry, joined in the pool by Danielle Hill, Ellen Walshe and Grace Davison, they set a national record time of 4:00.12.
Unfortunately however, it wasn’t enough to qualify for the final as they finished sixth in a hotly-contested heat race.
It marks the end of a remarkable games for Mona McSharry, as the athlete who trains with the Ballyshannon Marlins sealed a memorable bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke.
Ireland’s medal interest in the Olympic pool is far from over though, as Daniel Wiffen is one of the favourites to take his second gold of the games in the 1500m final tomorrow.
