Respite beds closed for four weeks at St Joseph’s, HSE confirms

HSE has clarified measures to bring respite beds back into compliance with regulations at a ward in St Joseph’s Community Hospital after a recent HIQA inspection.

Concerns were raised after a number of patients were moved from respite beds in recent days.

Local Sinn Féin Cllr Dakota Nic Mheanman led the call for answers amid concerns for the future of the facility.

The HSE has since responded today to outline that the beds are closed only on a temporary basis.

A spokesperson said: “Following a HIQA inspection last week in St Joseph’s Community Hospital, Stranorlar and in order to continue to operate within the regulations, a number of respite beds had to be temporarily closed to allow for essential refurbishment/fire upgrade works to continue.

“A number of respite beds in Finn View ward had to be cancelled for an approximate four week period in order for these essential works to be completed.

“The HSE is working closely with HIQA to ensure these beds become operational as soon as possible. Alternative respite arrangements have been offered to patients and their families.”
