Letterkenny’s McGettigan’s Hotel has been given the green light for a major extension.
Permission has just been granted for the new plan will see an additional 61 bedrooms as well as a spa as part of a four storey extension.
Permission for the development was initially granted by An Bord Pleanala in 2019 but the hotel then closed for the pandemic and switched to accommodating refugees from Ukraine in March 2022.
A new application by Dennis McGettigan was lodged in early June of this year and has now been granted.
Part of the overall plan will see the demolition of the old Milan Nightclub.
Mr McGettigan is seeking to bring the total number of bedrooms to 144 through a new four-story side extension, with 35 bedrooms, and a new fifth floor, over the existing bedroom block, which will provide an additional 26 bedrooms.
The proposed spa is intended to improve the experience of a stay at the hotel, with beauty and spa treatment space for guests and others.
The proposal also includes extending the main lift to fourth floor level to provide direct access from the reception area to the spa.
The original Gallagher’s Hotel was purchased by McGettigan’s Hotels in 2015 and was re-named McGettigan’s Hotel.
Since then McGettigan’s Hotels has carried out significant changes including the upgrade of fire safety systems, the closure of Milan nightclub and the combination of the former McCarry’s Bar and Milan nightclub into a new bar and restaurant called Warehouse Bar.
