Gardaí have revealed that a motorist in south Donegal was among the worst speeding drivers caught last weekend.
The vehicle was clocked at 145km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N15 over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
Throughout the August Bank Holiday weekend, an extensive Garda Roads Policing Operation was in place between 7am on Thursday, 1st of August 2024 and 7am yesterday, Wednesday.
There were three fatalities on Irish roads during this period. Eleven serious collisions took place that resulted in 12 people receiving serious and life-threatening injuries.
Over this Bank Holiday period, An Garda Síochána carried out over 1,017 Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) checkpoints.
Some 4,918 roadside drug and alcohol tests were conducted which led to over 180 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Other shocking speed detections included a motorist doing 186km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N24 close to Piltown, Co. Kilkenny. Another was caught speeding at 164kp/h in a 100kp/h zone on the N3 near Cavan.
Last weekend, hundreds of fines were handed out for using a mobile phone while driving (294 fines), being an unaccompanied learner driver (174) and not wearing a seatbelt (106).
A garda spokesperson said: “Enforcing road traffic laws is a core element of road safety, however, there is a personal responsibility on every road user to exert caution to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
“It is disappointing that in spite of public awareness campaigns and widespread efforts among both Gardaí and relevant partners such as the Road Safety Authority urging motorists to slow down – drivers continue to travel at dangerously excessive speeds on Irish roads.
“Anyone prepared to drive at the speeds detected over the course of the August Bank Holiday Weekend has the potential to destroy lives, including their own.”
