The famous Leghowney Sheep Races make a welcome return tomorrow after a nine-year lapse.
The family fun day is centred around Leghowney Community Hall, near Barnesmore Gap, with the proceeds being reinvested into local community facilities.
The highlight, of course, is the sheep races with the first heat due to begin at 1:30pm.
However, there will also be a Bouncy Castle, Face Painting, Monster Raffle, Live Music, Novelty Races, and much more with barbeque, tea/coffee/scones and ice-cream available during the day. Admission is only €5 and under 12s admission is free. Gates open from 1pm to 6pm.
For further information, keep an eye on the Leghowney Community Hall Facebook page.
The last Sheep Race Day was held at Leghowney Hall in 2015, and there have been many developments around the hall since then.
A new Play Park opened in 2017 which is used on a regular basis by local and visiting children and families. The car park has also been fully tarred and partially lined.
The new extension was added to the hall during 2020-2021. This increased the stage capacity and allowed extra space for productions and performances. The new extension also incorporates a Community Hub, furnished with office equipment, computers, projection screen and high-speed broadband. This is available to the local community to facilitate working from home and is suitable for visiting clubs or groups requiring a conference/ meeting room.
An accessible toilet was opened beside the play-park in 2021. Solar panels and a water harvesting tank have also been added in the last few years, making the centre more sustainable. Leghowney Loop Walk has continued to be upgraded over the past few years with seating and information boards recalling local history/heritage and our local flora and fauna added in 2022.
