A Londoner will use Donegal to get a good night’s sleep before he embarks on a cycle taking in the length of Ireland to raise funds for epilepsy research.
Beginning on August 21st, Iain Mentiply will be taking on the mammoth challenge of travelling from the North Pole Bar in Co. Donegal to the South Pole Inn in Co. Kerry.
The route spans a total of 375 miles, and Iain is embarking on this journey for Epilepsy Ireland in memory of his late brother-in-law Joe Griffin, who sadly passed away in January of 2023.
Joe lived with epilepsy throughout his life, and Iain witnessed first-hand the support he received from Epilepsy Ireland’s Community Resource Officers in supporting Joe on his journey with the condition – inspiring him to support Epilepsy Ireland in Joe’s memory:
“I saw how much Joe valued the support he got from his Community Resource Officer and how much he looked forward to meeting her. This has inspired me to help Epilepsy Ireland carry on this fantastic work in his memory.”
Iain is 69-years-young, and his route will see him travel through the heartland of Ireland across 7 days – with scheduled stops in Omagh, Cavan, Portumna, Adare and Tralee. Commenting on the challenge ahead, Iain said:
“I’ve never taken on something like this before, but every hill and turn will be worth it if I can help others like Joe.”
Commending Iain on his efforts, Epilepsy Ireland’s Fundraising and Development Manager, Cian Dikker said: “We would like to thank Iain for his incredible support in Joe’s memory – somebody who was well-known to our team and sorely missed by all who knew him. Before he’s even began, Iain’s already raised over €1,400!
