Ireland is set to be hit with heavy downpours and very strong winds as the remnants from Hurricane Ernesto traverse the Atlantic.
Hurricane Ernesto churned across Bermuda over the weekend, causing dangerous sea conditions and three confirmed deaths by drowning.
Hurricane Ernesto is forecast to transition to a mid-latitude storm near northeastern Canada this week, before its remnant track eastwards.
“As is typical with these systems there is a high degree of uncertainty in the forecast, but current indications suggest Ireland may experience some associated wet and windy weather on Wednesday (21st Aug) through to Thursday (22nd of Aug),” said Met Eireann.
Donegal’s Atlantic coast will see winds increase to strong or very strong levels on Wednesday afternoon.
Wednesday night will have heavy overnight rain, the risk of flooding and strong winds. Thursday will be “will be largely dry with sunny spells and well scattered showers” but will also see showery outbreaks of rain in Atlantic coastal areas later in the evening.
“Another spell of windy and very wet weather will come through on Thursday night bringing a chance of flooding in places. Lowest temperatures 10 to 12 degrees with variable winds,” said Met Eireann.
The forecast for Friday says “heavy rain is expected to move through Friday morning, once again clearing to sunshine and blustery showers. Highest temperatures 14 to 18 degrees.”
Indications are that unsettled conditions will persist into the weekend.
Forecasters say: “Sunshine and showers on Saturday, highest temperatures 14 to 18 degrees with mostly moderate westerly winds.
“Current indications are that unsettled conditions will persist through Sunday and in to next week.”
