Council ‘happy’ to work with community for benefit of Pettigo

Donegal County Council says it is happy to work with the community in Pettigo in relation to the upkeep and repairs to the border village.

They were responding to an article on Donegal Daily on Tuesday when it was claimed residents there were forced to raise money to carry out repairs to public areas due to council inaction.

“Donegal County Council carries out maintenance and repairs to public areas to the extent of resources available and to a level of priority that does not always align with residential groups wishes,” a council spokesperson said.

“DCC are happy to work with local groups in the interests of maximising the benefits that can be brought to the local community.”

One local, Michael McAndrews, has set up a GoFundMe page which has so far raised more than €2,300. The money has gone towards weeding as well as the painting and repair of fencing, bollards, bins and street furniture.

“The Village of Pettigo, situated on the Donegal-Fermanagh border, is in desperate need of a general clean up,” Mr McAndrews posted on their GoFundMe page.

“There are overgrown weeds in The Diamond, bollards, fencing, benches and bins that require restoration and painting and road signs that have seen better days. We have made many attempts to get the council to take responsibility, (but) to no avail. And we are now faced with having to sort it out ourselves.”

Any monies raised, he stressed, will be for the sole purpose of improving the aesthetic look of the village, with any excess being held for continued maintenance.
