Carndonagh residents seek traffic calming measures after near misses

Residents in Carndonagh are seeking traffic calming measures in their area after several near misses involving speeding cars.

The group on the Carrowreagh road, Carndonagh have raised concerns this week with local councillors and Gardai.

The road, which is an artery from Carndonagh to Redcastle has a speed restriction leaving Carndonagh of 50kmph until several hundred yards past the Springfield/Balmain housing development.

However, the residents say that 95% of the traffic is moving well above this limit and the road is becoming increasingly dangerous.

In recent months there have been two pet dogs killed and several near misses near the Springfield/Balmain entrances.

The spokesperson said “The Carrowreagh road has pedestrians, dog walkers and school children throughout the day and to see vehicles passing at 60 and 70mph and disregarding the speed limit is concerning said a member of the group.

“We have liaised with the Gardai and local councillors in the hope to make a move towards some sort of traffic calming on the road before there is a tragedy, but most of all we would like to request in the meantime that drivers respect the residents, walkers and school children and respect the speed limit.”
