Contract signed for new social housing estate in Twin Towns

Donegal Council has signed a contract for the construction of 14 new turnkey social houses in the Twin Towns.

The local MBC Building Contractors will undertake the development at Donegal Road, Ballybofey.

Work has already commenced on site and is due to be completed in phases, with the final phase to be finished in September 2025.

“The development will provide high-quality, sustainable homes for 14 families from the council’s social housing waiting list in Ballybofey/Stranorlar,” a council spokesperson said.

Welcoming the announcement, Cllr Patrick McGowan said it was great to see a local firm helping to build much needed social housing in the area.

“The next 12 months will see the construction of hundreds of homes for those on the long term council housing list in Ballybofey and Stranorlar, Lifford, Convoy, Raphoe and St Johnston as well as Habinteg new voluntary housing in Castlefinn which have been approved by the Department of Housing,” he said.

“This comes after many years of lobbying, meetings and workshops by local councillors working with Council staff to navigate the complex criteria set out by Department officials based on the Government’s housing strategy. Demand led, value for money, proper housing mix and a rigorous planning and tendering application process are necessary.”
