A number of Donegal drivers were clocked travelling well in excess of the speed limit at the start of a 24-hour garda operation urging motorists to slow down.
National Slow Down Day, which runs from 7am today until 7am tomorrow, reminds motorists of the dangers of speeding and to increase overall compliance with speed limits.
In the Letterkenny area, one driver was caught doing 141 Kph while others were also nabbed travelling at frightening speeds.
“National Slow Down Day is underway and speed checks are being conducted by Letterkenny Roads Policing Unit,” a garda spokesperson said.
“A number of motorists have been detected travelling in excess of a 100 Kph speed limit today and fixed charge penalty notices will be issued. We are trying to make the roads safer for everyone. Please play your part and slow down. Speed can and does kill.”
These examples of speed come just after a dark week on Donegal roads which saw four deaths in six days.
So far this year, 12 people have lost their lives on Donegal roads – two more than the total for the whole of last year.
The latest garda campaign comes at the start of the first full week of the new school term for both primary and secondary school students.
With the return of schools, Gardaí urged road users to note there will be additional traffic on the roads, in particular younger vulnerable road users.
They also said that with darker evenings ahead, driving conditions will become more challenging.
