Do you know of a person or group in Donegal who have worked tirelessly to protect and promote heritage in your area?

If you do, then The Heritage Council wants to hear from you. The public are invited to nominate who they feel deserves the ‘Heritage Hero’ award by completing the short nomination form on the Heritage Week website at https://www.heritageweek.ie/awards by Tuesday, September 24.

The Heritage Hero award is part of the National Heritage Week Awards that take place annually to celebrate outstanding heritage projects and events.

National Heritage Week took place from August 17 to August 25 and there were over 120 events and two digital projects in County Donegal.

The National Heritage Awards ceremony will take place in November. As well as the National Heritage Hero Award based on nominations from the public, Heritage Week event organisers can nominate their projects or events for the following awards:

Connections, Routes & Networks Award
Wild Child Event Award
Water Heritage Day award
Inclusive Heritage Award
Irish Language Award
Sustainability & Climate Award
Intangible Cultural Heritage Award
County Award

Two National Heritage Week Awards were awarded to Donegal-based projects last year:

Togra Fiontar and Cultúr Uladh won the Irish Language Event Award for its Feile Saibhreas na Síoraíochta. The Irish Language Event Award was awarded to the best event or project that took place through the Irish language and encouraged participation or activity in the Irish language.

The Inishowen Rivers Trust in partnership with The Loughs Agency won the Water Heritage Award for its Culdaff River Heritage Workshop. The Water Heritage Award was awarded to the event or project that best explored how a canal, river, lake or sea shaped the heritage of a locality or celebrated water as an integral part of our natural heritage, as well as being a vital part of our future, or reflected on what more we can do to conserve this valuable resource.

County Donegal has over 250 known heritage groups and one of the highest participation rates in heritage in the country so be sure to nominate your Heritage Hero on the Heritage Week website at https://www.heritageweek.ie/awards by Tuesday, September 24.
