A teenage driver of one of the cars involved in last Friday’s fatal Inishowen crash has been arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of an intoxicant.

Much loved Greencastle woman, Donna McDermott, was killed when the car in which she was a back seat passenger was in collision with another vehicle at Quigley’s Point junction at 11:15pm.

The male driver of the other car, a blue VW Beetle, was arrested after he failed a roadside breath test at the scene. A sample taken from him will be analysed before any charges are brought against him. He was uninjured.

The arrest was confirmed by Buncrana Superintendent, Shaun Grant, in an interview with today’s Inishowen Independent.

The late Donna McDermott.

Ms McDermott’s mother, Mary, who is in her 70s, was driving the second car, an Opel Mokka, and Donna’s partner Robert (50s), were both rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry where they were treated for non life-threatening injuries.

The funeral of Donna McDermott, who was in her mid-thirties, is due to take place tomorrow.

She was the fifth person to die on Donegal’s roads in just thirteen days.

This latest tragedy now brings the number of people killed on Donegal’s roads so far this year to 13 – three higher than last year’s total.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the Greencastle collision to come forward. Gardaí are also appealing for any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) who were travelling in the area at the time of the collision to make this footage available to them.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
