Friends of Letterkenny University Hospital has announced a major donation to LUH to improve services across several departments.
Almost €385,000, which was raised locally, will be used to purchase equipment for the benefit of patients and staff.
The new equipment is intended to attract new hospital consultants, while some new services will save patients the lengthy journeys to other hospitals.
A spokesperson for the fundraising group said: “The Friends of Letterkenny University Hospital are delighted to announce the donation of almost €385,000 to the hospital in the coming few weeks. The money is targeted at new service developments in Respiratory Medicine, Urology, Gastroenterology, Symptomatic Breast Service and Radiology.”
“Hospital Management made the request to The Friends to expedite service developments that will enhance services, make the relevant departments more attractive for recruiting new hospital consultants and to provide services locally where patients currently have to travel outside Donegal to access the service.”
A Balloon Pump Assisted Enteroscopy (€160,000) will be purchased for the Gastroenterology department to improve the diagnosis of small bowel cancer.
A Contrast Pump Injector (€35,100) will be added to the MRI machine for symptomatic breast diagnostics to facilitate more forensic breast cancer diagnoses via MTI imaging.
The Rezúm Procedure (€30,800) will be offered in the Urology department to treat prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate) in men.
A Kalium Lazer (€134,000) will be used in the Urology department for laser treatment to facilitate tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and the risk of infection in prostatic disease.
An Ultrasound Machine (€25,000) has already been delivered to the Respiratory Medicine department to assist in US-guided biopsy of lung tissue, pleural taps, and cytology sampling.
“We would like to extend our gratitude to all those who assist the Friends of LUH in our fundraising in every way,” the charity volunteers said.
