A multi-million euro improvement to the Fintra Bridge in the south-west of the county has officially gone to tender.
The long-awaited news was announced this morning, with Donegal County Council now to seek a contractor to carry out the improvement works.
Concerns have been raised by locals for many years that the narrow bridge, as well as the road in the area was especially dangerous.
Along with works on the bridge, a realignment of 1.4km of the R263 road will take place.
Plans are also in place for a new 1.9km stretch of cycle and pedestrian path between Killybegs and Fintra Beach also.
Local Councillor Niamh Kennedy confirmed the news today.
“At last! I am delighted to announce that the Department has given us the go-ahead to proceed to e-tender to appoint a contractor for Fintra bridge and road re-alignment,” Cllr Kennedy said.
“This multi million euro project has been in the pipeline for many years, I am delighted to have been working on this project every step of the way.”
