Letterkenny community saddened by passing of well-known butcher, Jimmy Gildea

The death has been announced of Jimmy Gildea, a popular butcher at Swilly Meats in Letterkenny.

Mr Gildea, of Correnagh, passed peacefully at his home this Friday morning.

Announcing the news, a tribute from Swilly Meats said: “With a very heavy heart, we are devastated to announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, friend and integral member of our team here at Swilly Meats.

“Jimmy’s contributions have been instrumental to our success and his absence will be profoundly felt by everyone at Swilly Meats.

“His passing will leave a huge void in our daily lives. May his gentle soul rest in peace.”

Swilly Meats will be closed tomorrow, Saturday, September 21st.

Jimmy was also a stalwart of the Letterkenny Athletic Club and served the club with pride since its inception in the 1970s.

Funeral Mass for Mr Gildea will take place this Sunday, 22nd September, at the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Ballyraine.

Obituary Notice:

The peaceful death has taken place at his home on Friday 20th September 2024 of Jimmy Gildea, Correnagh Letterkenny F92 K6XT. Deeply missed by his loving wife Marian, son Mark (Karina) and daughters Tanya (Paul) and Laura, grandchildren, brothers Charlie, Vincent, Brendan, Danny and Laurence, sisters Elenor McGill and Ann Toner, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours.

Jimmy is predeceased by his parents Packie and Mary Jane, sister Josephine Sweeney and brother Patsy.

Jimmy’s remains are reposing at his late residence on Friday 20th September from 4pm until 10pm and on Saturday 21st September from 12 noon until 10pm with Rosary both nights at 9pm.

Funeral from there on Sunday, 22nd September, at 12.15pm going to the Church of the Irish Martyrs, Ballyraine for 1pm Requiem Mass which can be viewed on https://www.youtube.com/@churchoftheirishmartyrs4657. Interment afterwards in New Leck Cemetery. Family time on the morning of the funeral please.
