The Donegal Local Development Community (DLDC) say that their “Global Growers Project” has been a success.
The project, in collaboration with Ionad Teampall Chróine, is a community initiative bringing together people from diverse cultural backgrounds – aiming to share and explore food practices from around the world while also addressing issues such as climate change, agriculutre and food security.
The Global Growers Project provided a dynamic platform for participants to engage in interactive discussions and activities centered on food from various cultures. The initiative aimed not only to celebrate the rich diversity of food traditions from around the world but also to raise awareness of how climate change is affecting global agriculture and food production.
Through the project, participants learned how communities can collaborate to tackle food security challenges in a rapidly changing climate.
The project was facilitated by DLDC, Christianah Eichieebi and Anne Omodara, who led discussions on how food is grown, prepared, and enjoyed across different cultures. During the first session, participants explored food traditions from countries such as Nigeria, Latvia, and Bangladesh, delving into the unique flavours and practices of each region. The second week offered an exciting culinary journey, where the delights of food from around the world were further discussed and enjoyed.
The project culminated in a hands-on cookery session led by Donna McGettigan, Community Food and Nutrition, DLDC, alongside Anne Omodara. Participants had the chance to cook a variety of global dishes, creating a vibrant spread that celebrated the diversity of cultures represented in the project.
“We are thrilled with the success of the Global Growers Project,” said Joanne Butler, Climate Action Officer, DLDC. “This initiative not only highlighted the rich cultural diversity present within our local community but also helped participants understand the global challenges we face in food production due to climate change. It has been an amazing journey of learning, sharing, and growing together.”
The Global Growers Project is an example of how cultural exchange and environmental awareness can work hand-in-hand to gain greater understanding and cooperation and how communities
can come together to address global challenges through local action.
