A Letterkenny woman is counting her blessings after a terrifying accident involving a loose horse.
Martina Murray narrowly avoided serious injury when the animal leapt onto her car, causing significant damage.
Martina says she is lucky to be alive after the frightening ordeal which took place in the Carnowen area of Castlefinn on Wednesday morning.
The black horse appeared “out of nowhere” and attempted to jump the car, she said.
The horse’s hoof struck the windscreen directly in front of her as she was driving. It then collided with the entire left side of the car, leaving it a write-off.
“To say I was shocked was an understatement,” said Martina.
“As everyone knows I’m an animal lover and my greatest fear was that the horse was killed but thankfully it wasn’t.”

The horse lept up onto the windscreen
Martina sustained a number of scratches and bruises but miraculously escaped any major injury.
She said she had ‘three angels’ arrive on the scene to help that morning.
A woman named Karen comforted Martina, called the emergency services and drove her to the health centre to get checked over before taking her home to Letterkenny.
A local man named Eugene arrived at the scene and began directing traffic while cleaning up debris from the road. Another man stopped and also assisted in the cleanup effort.
“Those 3 people went out of their way to help a stranger…they will never know how thankful I am to them,” Martina said.
Martina is now appealing for help in locating the owner of a black horse. The animal is “bound to be cut or bruised or injured”, she said.
Anyone who may have information about the horse, including vets who may have treated it or local horse owners, is asked to get in contact.
