The Donegal Thatch School, located at the Dolmen Centre in Portnoo, is offering a free taster day for thatched cottage homeowners or those interested in learning the craft.

The introductory days are taking place either Saturday, October 12th or Sunday, October 13th, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

This taster day is aimed at owners of thatched houses and those thinking of becoming thatchers.

Attendees will get an introduction to different thatching methods, before getting hands-on thatching training roofs using flax and straw, using the rope and the scolloped methods. Guidance will be provided by experienced crafts people, and no previous experience is necessary.

Places are free, but limited to a maximum of 10 attendees. To secure your spot, contact the Dolmen Centre at 074 9545010 or by email at info@dolmencentre.ie. The Dolmen Centre is located at Kilclooney Beg, Portnoo, F94 DN83

This workshop is sponsored by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage a division of the National Built Heritage Service and is an action of the National Vernacular Strategy.
