Irish troops “remain steadfast” in their determination and resilience to fulfill their peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, despite the escalating violence between Hezbollah and Israeli forces.
More than 30 soldiers are operating from a small outpost in the area of the Blue Line which divides Lebanon from Israel and the Golan Heights.
Israel’s breach of the Blue Line last week was condemned as an “unacceptable violation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701” by Tánaiste and Minister for Defence Micheál Martin.
The UNP6-52 outpost, which is 8km from the Irish base Camp Shamrock, is now in the heart of the conflict. Troops are operating under what is known as level 3 which means they are to shelter in place when they must and remain in bunkers.
A spokesperson for the Defence Forces told Donegal Daily: “As the lines of engagement move north of UN Post 6-52, it has resulted in extremely restricted movement.
“Road access has been curtailed by these engagements, and the associated military actions. Sheltering in place is still the safest option at this point in time.
“This is a fast moving and dynamic military situation and it is important to have factual and accurate information, which our soldiers are providing.”
“This is an extremely dangerous development,” said UNIFIL. “It is unacceptable to compromise the safety of UN peacekeepers carrying out their Security Council-mandated tasks.”
“UNIFIL urgently reminds all actors of their obligations to protect UN personnel and property.”
An Irish Defence Forces statement to the concerned families of soldiers said: “The Defence Forces can reconfirm that all personnel in Lebanon are well and accounted for, and are maintaining vigilance in their mission areas. Despite the tough conditions, the Irish troops remain steadfast in their determination and resilience to fulfill the mission.
“The Defence Forces would like to acknowledge and thank the families of our soldiers currently deployed in Lebanon. Your strength, patience and support of our troops at this difficult time is much appreciated.”
